Driving Toward the Future: Burke Subaru Inspires LCMR Sophomores Through Career and Financial Literacy Seminar
On Friday, June 5, 2026, Lower Cape May Regional High School welcomed Burke Subaru President Doug Burke and Business Manager Paula Hopkins to the Performing Arts Center for an engaging and informative seminar designed specifically for the sophomore class. Sponsored through the Subaru Love Promise initiative, the presentation provided students with valuable insights into financial literacy, vehicle ownership, career pathways, and the many opportunities available within the automotive industry.
The event was the result of a collaborative partnership between the LCMR Media Center, led by Mrs. Jessica Donohue, and Mr. Mike Wilson's Business Program. Together, they sought to create an authentic learning experience that connected classroom concepts to real-world career opportunities. To enhance student engagement, four business students served as a panel and asked prepared questions on behalf of their classmates. Their thoughtful questions prompted discussions about entrepreneurship, leadership, workforce development, customer service, and the day-to-day realities of operating a successful business in Cape May County.
With many LCMR sophomores recently completing driver's education and preparing for summer employment, the timing of the presentation could not have been better. Doug Burke shared practical advice on purchasing versus leasing a vehicle, budgeting for transportation expenses, understanding credit, and making informed financial decisions as young adults. Students also learned about the wide variety of careers available within a modern dealership, including sales, finance, management, customer service, marketing, technology, and skilled trades.
The seminar helped students connect classroom learning to real-world applications while encouraging them to think critically about their future goals. Through both the presentation and the panel discussion, students gained valuable insights into how business principles are applied in a thriving local company every day. Burke Subaru's willingness to invest time in educating local students demonstrated a meaningful commitment to supporting the next generation of Cape May County residents.
The event also created memorable opportunities for students to make personal connections with industry leaders. Sophomore Blake Jones introduced himself to Doug Burke and shared his passion for automobiles. While Blake is still exploring future career possibilities, he expressed sincere gratitude for the opportunity to meet the president of Burke Subaru and make a meaningful connection with someone who shares his enthusiasm for cars. Experiences like this help students recognize that professional relationships and networking can begin long before graduation.
Junior Logan DiCarlo, who has a strong interest in business, entrepreneurship, and automobiles, played a key role in the event's success. Logan introduced the guest speakers to the audience and served as a liaison between the presenters and students throughout the seminar. Walking through the audience with a microphone, he encouraged participation and helped facilitate real-time questions and discussion, creating a more interactive and engaging experience for everyone in attendance.
Logan recently launched his own mobile detailing business and was especially excited to speak with Doug Burke and Paula Hopkins about their experiences in the automotive industry. Recognizing Logan's ambition and entrepreneurial spirit, Doug invited him to visit Burke Subaru for a dealership tour, to ask questions, and to gain firsthand exposure to the many careers available in the industry. This invitation provided Logan with a unique opportunity to explore potential career pathways and see a successful business operation in action.
By the conclusion of the seminar, students left with a greater understanding of financial responsibility, career exploration, entrepreneurship, and the importance of building professional connections. Burke Subaru's investment in the students of Lower Cape May Regional High School exemplifies the spirit of the Subaru Love Promise and serves as a powerful reminder that education extends far beyond the classroom.
LCMR is grateful to Doug Burke, Paula Hopkins, and the entire Burke Subaru team for enriching our students' educational experience and helping them envision exciting possibilities for their futures.
