Members of the Class of 2026 marked the beginning of their senior year last week, both literally and

More than 50 of the about 110 seniors took part in a growing tradition at Lower Cape May Regional High School when they picked and painted their parking spots.

“It really was like a parking lot party,” Assistant Principal Kelly Godfrey said.

The 2006 LCMRHS graduate said staff members donated hot dogs and water bottles, grilled for the students and provided an enjoyable time. Students showed up with family and friends, beach chairs and tents.

Godfrey, a former special education teacher, began her role as an administrator in summer 2023 and immediately brought the idea to Superintendent Greg Lasher.

“I originally proposed the idea when I was first promoted to assistant principal during the 2023–24 school year. While we weren’t able to bring it to life that year, I was determined to make it happen for the 2024–25 school year — and with the support of Mr. Lasher and the Board of Education, we did,” Godfrey said.

Students had to submit their designs to Godfrey in advance and be eligible to park in the lot in order to participate in the event, held Aug. 27-28.

“With the support of our staff, we grilled, played music and helped students while they worked hard on their spots. Many were joined by parents, siblings, friends and family members, making it a true community event,” Godfrey said.
